Some people will argue that ChatGPT* was not at fault in a teen suicide, “there were obviously many other factors at play”. But consider this: if you know you can design for better understanding, and add positive friction that helps people recognize when they are being misled by synthetic text, why wouldn’t you?

*As @datarama rightly points out, this should be better worded as addressing OpenAI, rather than their product, while I also wanted to draw attention to how the software, and how they have chosen to design it, is a component of the issue. But yes, perhaps there should be less emphasis on their software.
